Christmas Treats Rock Art Tutorial #FestiveChristmas

Welcome back to year 6 of our Festive Christmas Event where we team up with a bunch of talented blogging friends to bring you a plethora of creative ways to celebrate your holiday season.

We will be baking some cookie recipes for you, sharing some party games, making some handmade gifts, doing some ornament crafting, and sharing our Christmas movies family fun
. There will be breakfast recipes and as always our decorated Christmas Trees which is always a fun tour of homes.

You will find new ideas every Monday and Wednesday between t. 19th through Nov. 18th. Scroll all the way down to find all the ideas linked at the end.  Today's theme is homemade gifts.

Our neighborhood has really gotten into painted rocks.  There are a number of small groups that get together and paint, and most of them hide them around town for others to find.  Another group or two like to paint rocks to give to their friends.  Nothing pleases us more than to find a rock on our front porch!

Here are some adorable rocks that I would love to find at my house!  These are basics, so add a holiday phrases or a cute holiday sentiment "From our house to yours!" on the rock.  And, of course, write the year too!

Rock Art  Supplies and Tips

Supplies include but are not limited to:

Rocks

Pencil with eraser

Pens

Paint

Paint brushes

Sealant

Glue

Any fun decor that you’re gluing

Tips:

  • Rocks can be found outside but should not be taken from protected natural areas.

  • If you are having trouble finding rocks, you can always purchase them on amazon, a local garden center, or at a local landscaping company. They will usually sell them by the bucket-full.

  • We do not recommend purchasing the smooth stones/river rocks from craft stores. They come with a coating on them and your paint/pen will not stick very well.

  • Make sure your rocks are clean and free of debris before starting your art.

  • If you need, you can lightly trace your design with a pencil first.

  • If you plan on painting, acrylic paint works best.

  • If you plan on using pen for your art, you can use paint markers (we suggest the Posca, Artistro, and Tooli-Art brands), artist pens, gelly roll pens, markers, highlighters, etc.

  • If you’d like to glue anything to your rocks, we recommend the E6000 brand. (Note: it is important to seal your rock with sealant prior to gluing items!)

  • We also recommend sealing your rocks after you’ve finished decorating them. You can use whatever finish you’d like (glossy, matte, etc). These can be found online or in your local craft stores. Our suggestions: Rust-oleum and Krylon brands.

  • Rock art is relaxing and fun. Let your imagination run wild!

To create these rocks, follow the instructions below.

For the candy cane:

  1. Make sure your rock is clean and free of debris.

  2. With a pencil, draw the shape of the candy cane. Add three holly leaves coming out from the center of the candy cane.

  3. Color the candy cane with white.

  4. Color the holly leaves with green.

  5. Add three red berries in the center of the holly and red stripes to the candy cane.

  6. Color the background in gray.

  7. Outline the entire drawing in black.

  8. Spray with sealant to complete the rock.

For the pumpkin pie:

  1. Make sure your rock is clean and free of debris.

  2. With a pencil, draw out the slice of pie, adding bumpy ridges for the crust.

  3. Color the crust in brown.

  4. Color the pie in orange.

  5. Outline the pie in black and add a small bit of white for the whipped cream.

  6. Color the background in white to make a “plate” and green around the plate.

  7. Outline the whipped cream in black.

  8. Spray with sealant to complete the rock.

For the gingerbread man:

  1. Make sure your rock is clean and free of debris.

  2. With a pencil, draw out the shape of his body and his head.

  3. Color his entire body in brown.

  4. Add a red bow tie.

  5. With white, add two larger buttons below his red bow tie, two eyes, a mouth, and “squiggly” lines on his legs and arms.

  6. Outline the gingerbread man in black, as well as his bow tie.

  7. Add two smaller buttons on top of the white buttons.

  8. Color in the background with red.

  9. Spray with sealant to complete the rock.

For the cup of cheer:

  1. Make sure your rock is clean and free of debris.

  2. With a pencil, draw out the shape of a mug, handle, and a few steam lines at the top.

  3. Color in the mug with white.

  4. Outline the mug in black. Write the word ‘cheer’ in pretty cursive with red.

  5. Color the background with green.

  6. Add two thick red lines around the word ‘cheer’.

  7. Color in the top of the mug with brown to show the hot chocolate.

  8. Add grey for the steam lines and outline them in black

  9. Outline the mug in black.

  10. Add small red x’s next to the thick red lines.

  11. Add two white cubes for marshmallows.

  12. Spray with sealant to complete the rock.

  1. These painted rocks are super cute! I'd love to do this. My daughters and I have been walking/hiking together lately. I thought it would be fun to leave painted rocks behind for others to find.
